For some, it was like time-traveling to the past! St Roch’s 2022 Feast featured over a dozen rides lighting up the field at Hamilton Avenue School for the first time in almost two decades.
According to published reports, the permit to hold the Feast on the field, after a 17 year hiatus at that location, was actually confirmed by Greenwich Public Schools only 4 hours before the official start time of the event due to difficulties in satisfying increased insurance coverage requirements specified by the town.
Once the insurance kerfuffle was ironed out, the rides were powered up, the Feast’s famous pizza fritta went into production, the colorful carnival games commenced, live musicians hit the stage, the crowds started to arrive, and the festive atmosphere lasted for days!
Each year thousands of people come to St. Roch’s Parish in Chickahominy to experience the St. Roch’s Feast – one of the best street festivals in the area!!
The Feast has a long history in the community – stretching back to the Italian immigrants who settled in Chickahominy and the generations of families they’ve raised there – and the pride they take in this annual event is evident. Smiles are on the faces of children, as parents and grandparents (with their own childhood memories of St Roch’s Feasts long past) introduce the younger generation to the summer fun.
In addition to the aforementioned pizza fritta, there was also plenty of other Italian specialties to be enjoyed including steaks, sausage and peppers, hamburgers, hot dogs PLUS a wine and beer garden – all guaranteed to satisfy even the most discerning palates.
In all, St Roch’s 2022 Feast represented a memorable continuation of a long-standing Greenwich summer tradition.
